Thoughts?

Story of my life much? When I used to audition, casting directors made me feel like an alien because they felt that they couldn’t pin point my ethnicity. I was Latina, but not Latina enough (whatever that means). I was light enough for the role but than I’d be too ethnic or not ethnic enough. It really took a toll on the image I have of my self beauty.

Today, I believe I’ve tried my best undoing all of those negative experiences. I’m a light skinned Latina and if you feel I don’t fit the perception of what a Latina looks like… Oh, well Too Bad!, because I am one.

Though I am a mix of Colombian & Peruvian, people tend to stare at me with a questionable look on their faces. If you think I look ambiguous if you look at me and can’t really pin point my ethnicity, AWESOME. I’ll take it because one day we’re all going to look so beautifully mixed that we won’t care to ask what our mix is.

Rage isn’t always a good thing. But I can’t deny the rage that boils inside of me when watching a heinous video like this. Why does my blood boil? Because its an undeniable truth. NYPD is so corrupted and everyone knows it but nothing is done about it. We make movies, jokes and openly speak about the injustices of the NYPD but it continues.

Its a vicious cycle. I’m positive there are beautiful human beings who intend on doing good as a police officer but the truth is that the system will risk your safety, reputation and salary for you to go against your morals just to meet a quota. Its like the hunger games, everyone fend for yourself by any means necessary.

I share media which I feel brings light to topics which are in the shadows. Share this so others can see the truth and fight back. Like Alvin, use what you can to capture the injustices/inequalities in our community. Media is a great tool to voice our stories so take advantage of it and use it for good.

Media ignores the fact that many Latinos are black. The majority of Latinos portrayed by the media are those of fair skin (like myself) or those who “look Latino” (basically, according to what White people believe that to be).

Well guess what! Latino’s are all types of mixed, boo boo! Roughly 48% of Latin America is BLACK.

And I ain’t letting my Black Latinos off the hook either. Cuz within our culture the idea of Blackness is not discussed and sometimes we put one another down.
My people, we’re not gonna go no where if we don’t accept the truth and the facts.

If ya both, Black & Latino, then ya both.

Learn your roots, love them and love yourself.
